What Are Some Good Gardening Tips? 29Apr14

If you want your family to eat healthy without heading to the grocery store three or four times a week, consider keeping organically grown produce on their plates with foods that you have grown yourself. Homegrown, organic produce is more delicious and nutritious than the produce you can find at the store. In order to get the most from your garden, you may wish to implement positive and creative gardening tips.

Start your planting early and end it late in the season. Using tunnels and cold frames will allow you to stretch the growing season in your area. You can start your spring planting season earlier, and use row covers in the fall to protect late crops from deer and frost.

Growing high-value crops means planting the produce that would cost you the most to purchase at the produce stand. Mother Earth News states that value can also refer to flavor temptations, which can mean making room for your favorite herbs and tomatoes. Consider, too, other foods that you didn’t grow last year, and see if you can save money by growing them at home this year.

Choosing the crops that have grown well for you year after year just makes good sense. Repeat the successes you have had in the past. If they are not favorites with your family, trade for foods that someone else grows that your family does like. If you have better luck with carrots than with beets, for example, keep your beet planting small and plant as many carrots as your family will eat. If your neighbors are also growers, arrange to trade veggies so that everyone will have what they like.

Growing crops that you can freeze or store makes good sense for your year-round, healthy diet. Early raspberries and strawberries that are ready in June can be stashed in the freezer, and ready for snacking or meals, while you turn your attention to veggies. Plant the foods that grow most easily, so that you can supply your family table year round.

What Are Some Decorative Ways to Light Your Patio and Yard this Summer? 22Apr14

When the nice weather arrives in the summer, it’s always nice to be able to head out to the yard to enjoy the relaxingly warm evenings. The kinds of lights you illuminate your environment with will set the mood for such treasured evenings, so be strategic with your selection of outdoor and patio lighting.

Below are some possibilities to consider when reflecting upon what is most fitting for you and your family:

1. Sconce light fixtures. Mounted to a wall, these ornate lamps tend to take on a vertical shape and direct light upward. Because of their decorative nature, sconces can be used to spruce up a doorway but should not be the sole source of brightness available on the porch.

2. String lighting. String lights effectively deliver a gentle glow that carries a fantastical air. They can be used to bedazzle tree branches, fences and, of course, Christmas trees. More importantly, many of these LED lights are solar-powered, making them cordless and ecofriendly. While white tinting adds a subtle touch of charm, string lights come in a variety of colors to help ring in the holidays.

3. Recessed lighting. Recessed lights are simple, sleek and can be tucked into the roofed patio of a modern home. Part of the charm is that they are inserted into the ceiling rather than protrude outward. Recessed lighting has dimmer switches that allow you to control the intensity so you can balance visibility with “setting the mood.”

4. Traditional Lanterns. More rustic than the other lighting options on this list, lanterns can be positioned as centerpieces or along pathways to add an enthralling charm to the nighttime darkness. Often manufactured with color glass, metal and candles, they should be used for their aesthetic properties more than as a light source. If you have young children in the household, it may be wise to find versions that utilize light bulbs instead of traditional fire.

5. Motion sensor flood lights. These lights are practical for numerous reasons; they will automatically turn on when people are stepping forth into your home’s vicinity to light their way and alert you to their presence. The only downside is that motion sensor flood lights can be a bit costly.

6. Pendant light. Beautiful and versatile, they are fixtures that hang down from the ceiling. Coming in diverse shapes and hues, pendant lights often double as works of art and can be a contemporary alternative to a classic chandelier.

7. Glow in the dark yard decorations. To make your garden a nighttime feast for the eyes, beautify your flower beds and yard with glow in the dark garden accessories. Especially appealing for children, Taylor Gifts has lighted LED spinners, glowing animal figurines and more!

Go ahead and make your yard and porch inviting to guests. With a bit of vision and only minimal funds, you can make your home both safe and pleasant.

What is the Fad With Organic Cookware? 28May13

Ads for organic cookware are all over TV and the internet these days. It seems that everywhere you look, you see someone demonstrating cooking with an organic skillet, pot or other pan, proclaiming its benefits. But just why is organic cookware so popular? In a word, it’s ‘healthy’.

The Original OrGREENIC Frying Pan, for example, is designed to allow you to cook food in the healthiest way possible. original orgreenic 10 inch frying panBecause its aluminum core is coated with a non-toxic ceramic coating, you don’t have to worry about harmful PFOAs leaching into your foods. PFOAs are synthetic substances used in many non-stick coatings—but not in the OrGREENIC Frying Pan. That’s because the designers of this frying know that exposure to PFOAs has been linked to several risks, not the least of which is higher cholesterol.

But the OrGREENIC folks didn’t design their organic cookware simply to eliminate PFOAs. They also designed it to allow you to cook healthier food through its non-stick ceramic coating. Because nothing sticks to the surface of the OrGREENIC Frying Pan, you can cook without oil, fat or grease. That means that your chicken and fish are better for you because they have no added fats. Vegetable stir fry is truly good for you because you don’t have to add anything to keep your delicious veggies from sticking to the pan as they cook.

The construction of this wonderful 10-inch frying pan offers more efficiency, too. It allows heat to transfer throughout the skillet evenly so everything cooks faster than it would in a traditional skillet. And the handle is ergonomically designed so this skillet is easy to maneuver, plus the handle features stay-cool technology so you won’t burn your hand when you lift the skillet. And the surface of the OrGREENIC Frying Pan won’t chip or peel. In fact, it is designed to last you a lifetime. So however you prefer to cook—boiling, braising, sautéing, frying or searing—you’ll love using the Original OrGREENIC Frying Pan every day.

But the Original OrGREENIC Frying Pan isn’t the only organic cookware that is gaining in popularity around the world. orgreenic 10 inch lidPair the frying pan with the OrGREENIC 10 Inch Lid. Like the frying pan, it is constructed of aluminum and coated with a non-stick, non-toxic ceramic coating. Using it helps you to cook even faster, and it cuts down on splatter from the natural juices in your food. A hole in the lid allows steam to escape, and the handle is ergonomically designed to make this lid easy to lift on and off the frying pan.

For a larger family or a friendly get-together over a home-cooked meal, the OrGREENIC 12 Inch Frying Pan will quickly become a favorite. orgreenic 12 inch frying panLike other OrGREENIC cookware, it offers a lifetime warranty. That’s because it will last a lifetime, remaining chip-free even if you use it every single day. And you’ll be tempted to do so because it’s a comfortable tool to use in your kitchen…comfortable and efficient and healthy.

Do you love grilled cheese sandwiches or pancakes? If so, you’ll discover that the OrGREENIC Griddle is the perfect piece of cookware for you. orgreenic griddleYou won’t have to spray the griddle with non-stick spray before you cook your meal, so you’ll save money and cut down on those pesky extra calories. No more buttering the griddle before cooking—save that butter for the top of the pancakes!

But the folks who designed the amazing OrGREENIC Frying Pan and Griddle didn’t stop there. They knew that today’s cooks need more than these simple staple tools. orgreenic 10 piece cookware setThey put together a set that includes ten pieces—everything you need to prepare your family’s favorite meals. The OrGREENIC 10 Piece Cookware Set includes an 8” fry pan, a 10” fry pan with lid, a 1.5 quart sauce pot with lid, a 2.5 quart sauce pot with lid, a 6 quart sauce pot with lid and an aluminum steamer insert. You’ll be able to prepare an entire feast faster and healthier than ever before. And like the original frying pan, the set features that fabulous aluminum core and the revolutionary non-stick, non-toxic ceramic coating that makes cooking fast and fun as it provides you with healthy results.

So try cooking a meal of your own with organic cookware, and you’ll quickly discover why it’s become such a fad.

Orgreenic 10 Piece Cookware Set 28Mar12

As you may know, I love to cook. I’m always trying new recipes and I become more adventurous with each meal I make. That is not to say that I don’t enjoy making simple dishes as well—sometimes you just can’t beat eggs, pancakes and bacon for dinner!

Orgreenic 10 Piece Cookware Set” width=
The biggest drawback of cooking is the cleanup. The good vibes I get from enjoying a delicious meal I’ve made myself are short lived when I see the pile of dishes waiting in the sink. Scrubbing, soaking, and scrubbing again is not what I want to do at the end of a long day. In January I told you about a frittata and a salmon filet I made with the OrGREENiC Frying Pan. I loved being able to take the pan straight from the stove top to the oven and cleanup was shockingly simple! Nothing stuck to the non-stick ceramic surface! A quick rinse and the pan was clean. I remember wishing all my pots and pans would be this versatile and easy to clean.

My wish has been granted! There is now an entire set of OrGREENiC pots and pans! The OrGREENiC 10 Piece Cookware Set is easy to use and clean, and looks great! You can easily broil, bake, braise, steam, sauté, fry, boil, and sear without adding extra oil, fat or grease! The ten piece set includes an 8” fry pan, 10” fry pan with a lid, 1.5 qt. sauce pot with lid, 2.5 qt. sauce pot with lid, 6 qt. stock pot with lid, and an aluminum steamer insert. I’m looking forward to braising a roast and tossing it right into the oven with veggies!

I can’t wait to get my new set of OrGREENiC Cookware to start cooking more and cleaning less!

Lint Lizard 31Jan12

I have spring fever! Out here on the east, we have had a very mild winter. The temperature will reach nearly 60 degrees today—the last day of January—and I love it! The spring-like weather every other week or so is a little reminder that winter does not last forever, as it sometimes seems it might.

The only thing I do not like about spring is the dreaded spring cleaning. The house has been closed up, needs to be aired out, the windows have collected a fine coating of dust (yuck!), the blades on the ceiling fans are looking a little dusty by this time, and all the nooks and crannies in your home that don’t see a vacuum during a normal cleaning could use a good scrub.

Most people don’t like cleaning windows. I don’t mind it so much. What I really dislike is cleaning out the dryer vent. There is no good way to do it with a regular vacuum. It’s a necessary safety measure to get the built up lint out of the lint trap and vent hose to prevent a fire, but the vacuum hose can only go so far. It creates such a mess and just seems like I’m making a bigger job of cleaning than I need to.

LINT LIZARDThat is where the Lint Lizard comes in. This handy tool attaches to your vacuum and the long, thin, flexible hose goes right down in the vent to reach where your regular vacuum attachments can’t. I’m also going to use this under, behind and around the washer and dryer, the refrigerator, behind the headboards in bedrooms, and any other place I can find that I can’t reach with my regular vacuum attachments.

Now I’m getting excited about spring cleaning!

Yoga Girl Water Bottle 30Jan12

Happy Monday! I hope you had a great weekend. Mine was family-filled. Really, just Saturday, but it was all day Saturday.

Due to the fact that I had to get on the road to meet up with my family way too early for a Saturday morning, I decided to take it easy on Friday night and even attempted to get to sleep early. So, I propped myself up in bed in my sea of pillows with my book and decided to rest early and hopefully fall asleep early. Is it just me, or is it every time that you try to go to sleep early it’s as if everyone knows and tries to stop you from sleeping? Long story short, my phone kept ringing, and each time I would jolt awake and not be able to fall back asleep. I had to be up by 6. I made it to the family adventures in time, don’t worry.

The entire family (almost 20 of us) went out for a family dinner to a Chinese food restaurant. This place is known for their duck – they serve up to 300 whole ducks a day – but being a vegetarian, I ordered vegetable fried rice. Needless to say, I wasn’t full by the time dinner was over. But, my mom and dad had a gigantic piece of my favorite chocolate cake at the house for me. How horrible is it that after dinner I came home and ate half of m chocolate cake? Does it make it better that I only ate half and not the whole thing? Either way, I did it, and it was delicious.

yoga water bottle” width=Now, I literally spent the time with my whole family and extended family all day and night, so you can imagine, I needed Sunday to recover. My friend and I got smart. We decided to make the most of what could be a lazy Sunday: We grabbed our yoga gear and yoga water bottles and went to a 9 a.m. yoga class. What a way to get motivated for the day. I spent the rest of the day preparing food for this week’s breakfasts and lunches. I am ready for the week!

Orgreenic Frying Pan 16Jan12

What a weekend! The weather was crisp and cold, a perfect weekend for snuggling under the blanket while watching movies, sipping on some hot chocolate, and trying out some new recipes in the crock pot. But of course, this is real life and I had things to do. I did spend a good deal of time indoors, doing laundry, cleaning, and doing some cooking, so it wasn’t a completely rush-around weekend.

CAKE POPS MAKERIn between grocery shopping and folding loads of clean clothes, I wanted to get some cooking done so I didn’t eat junk all weekend. I used the new Orgreenic Frying Pan to make a Green Chili Frittata. The Orgreenic pan is oven safe, so I could start the frittata on the stove and then place the pan directly into the oven. The aluminum core helps the pan heat evenly, so the eggs were cooked perfectly. I also used the pan to make salmon. The non-stick ceramic surface kept the fish from sticking so I didn’t have to use any extra butter or oil to keep it from sticking. I love this pan and can’t wait to make more meals with it!

Bamboo Drying Rack 12Jan12

Yesterday was a very rainy day! I don’t really like rainy days–not sure that I know of anyone who does. But I know that I’d prefer a few inches of rain over a few feet of snow, so I’ll try not to complain. While I knew it was supposed to rain and I planned for it by bringing my rain boots along, I neglected to bring my umbrella. So my feet were dry and my jacket was soaked. bamboo drying rack” width= No big deal though because as soon as I got home, I pulled out my collapsible bamboo drying rack and I hung my coat and wet clothes to dry. If it were laundry day, I would have just tossed everything in the washer, but it isn’t and I don’t want those clothes going in the hamper soaking wet and getting mildewed. Everything was dry this morning, so I collapsed the drying rack and tucked it back in the closet beside the washer. How handy!

Luckily, today is a sunny day so far…but I’m bringing my umbrella just in case!

Tread Ahead 02Jan12

TREAD AHEADWhere I live, it’s that time of year; time to get ready for snow. We can really never be too prepared. The worst part is when your car gets stuck in the snow, and there is no shovel to help dig out the car. A new item I found might be just what I need to add to my snow emergency kit that I keep in my car, Tread Ahead.

Have you used the Tread Ahead yet? What do you think? How much easier would life be if we didn’t have to chip away the ice that forms under our car tires anymore? With Tread Ahead, all that has to be done is to place the Tread Ahead beneath the front of the tire stuck in the snow, and the car will out! The Tread Ahead could really help out in tricky situations if the car gets stuck, like mud, snow, ice, plus there is a built in handle and ice scraping edge to clear your windows.

The Tread Ahead can be used in more than just snow situations. You can use the Tread Ahead to help get out of mud and up ice as well. The Tread Ahead might be just what we all need just in case this winter.
